私は資産の大半をHSBC香港で米国株として保有しているので、定期的にW-8BENという申請書を提出する必要があります。今回はそのメモです。
一昔前は郵送して何回かミスってようやく成功するという力が抜けるような作業をしていましたが、数年前からインターネット上で解決できるようになりました。
3年に一回更新する必要があるようなので、今年がちょうどその3年目になるようです。
期日が近づくとHSBC香港から以下のようなメールが届きます。
Our records show that you submitted a Form W-8BEN to us in 2020 to comply with the US tax regulations and reporting requirements. In general, a Form W-8BEN remains in effect from the date it is signed until the last day of the third succeeding calendar year. Kindly note that your form submitted in 2020 will expire at the end of this year, so we would like to remind you to complete and submit a new form declaring your latest tax status.
To be sure that you are complying with the US tax regulations and reporting requirements, please complete and return the Form W-8BEN to us on or before 31 December 2023 by one of the following methods:
1. Go paperless! With our mobile trading app HSBC HK Easy Invest, you can now complete and submit the above electronically. Simply login and select "Substitute Form W-8BEN" from the menu located on the top left corner of the app. The HSBC HK Easy Invest app can be downloaded conveniently by following the instructions available on our bank website. Simply navigate to the page "Investing" and select "HSBC HK Easy Invest".
Alternatively, you can complete and submit via HSBC Online Banking, simply go to www.hsbc.com.hk and login and select "U.S. Stock trading" under the "My investment" menu, then select "Substitute Form W-8BEN" under "More links" to get started.

2. Download the Form W-8BEN from the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw8ben.pdf, complete and return by post to the address below (please write your account number on the upper left-hand corner of your form for account identification).

私は以前ダウンロードしたことがありますが、香港のApple IDのパスワードがわからなくなったのか、ロックされたのか、ダウンロードできなくなってしまいました。
悔しいですがハマりそうな気がしたので、今回はウェブで更新しました。
Eメールの指示通り、U.S. stock tradingのページに行き、More linksのところにカーソルを合わせると、Substitute Form W-8BENというのが出てくるのでクリックします。
入力時に気をつけることは、日本在住であれば以下をJapanとしておくことです。
租税条約で配当金（分配金）への税金が10％になります。中国に住んでいた時は30％だったので悲しかったです。
これで必要事項を入力したら無事に完了です。
HSBC HK Easy Investがダウンロードできなくてもやもやしちゃいましたが、無事に更新できてよかったです。
今はVTIを保有するだけの口座になっているので特に売買はしませんが、手続き不備により使えなくなったら困るので、こういう情報はこまめにチェックしておきたいところです。
