私は英語の勉強を兼ねて、英語で情報収集をしています。特に最近The Economistを少しずつ読むようにしています。
この記事の内容は、The Economist Espressoという600円/月のニュース配信サービスが良くまとまっていていい感じ、というものです。
正直何が書かれているのかよくわかっていませんが、英文を見た＝読んだということにしています。

今回は、The EconomistにあるEspressoを紹介します。
The Economistがリリースしているニュースブリーフと呼べばいいのでしょうか。毎朝ニュースのまとめを配信してくれます。
エスプレッソのように濃くて、毎朝気軽に楽しむことができる。
そんなニュースブリーフです。
2014年からこのサービスを開始したようです。

Delivered to your smartphone or inbox before breakfast, it tells you what’s on the global agenda in the coming day, what to look out for in business, finance and politics and, most important, what to make of it.
先日試しにThe Economistの無料お試しを申し込んでみました。
The Economistのバックナンバーにもアクセスできるデジタル版です。3,500円/月位します。
これで「Espresso」の存在を知りました。
幸運なことに私はこのお試し版を長期間お試しすることができました。
無料お試し期間がなぜかずっと解除されなかったからです（iOS14にアップデートしたらこの魔法が解けた）。
このおかげで長期間無料でThe Economistを体験することができました。
これで分かったのは、肝心の雑誌版はほとんど読まずに「Espresso」ばかりを読んでいたという事実です。
つまり「Espresso」だけあればよいです。
「Espresso」のメリットは以下の通りです。
- 英文が雑誌版と比べて容易
- タイムリー
- 記事が短い
どんな感じなのか9月29日の「Espresso」より一部引用します。
まず以下のような短い記事が７つ位毎朝配信されます。
India surpassed 6m recorded cases of covid-19, while the global death toll neared 1m, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 33m infections have now been recorded worldwide. The United States has the most confirmed deaths, more than 200,000, followed by Brazil, with over 140,000, and India, with more than 95,000. Many European countries are struggling to contain a second wave of infections.
次に以下の少し長めの記事が５つ配信されます。
President Donald Trump will hope that tonight’s televised debate with Joe Biden, his Democratic rival, will allow him to make up ground. He is polling at an average of 43%, versus 50% for Mr Biden. Details of Mr Trump’s low federal income tax payments, published in the New York Times, may have hurt his ratings further. But history suggests that debates rarely offer a boost. According to The Economist’s analysis, since 1976 the average change in the incumbent party’s poll rating from two weeks before the first debate to two weeks after the last has been 0%. Since 1960 the lead has changed only once during debate season, in 2000, when George W. Bush briefly overtook Al Gore. That said, trends can be bucked. To do so Mr Trump must convince voters that he can do a better job in his second term. The problem is, many voters have already made up their minds.
もちろん、内容はワールドワイドで、たまに日本のニュースも取り上げられます。
これを毎日読むのは、量的にもちょうどよいし続けられそうだと思いました。
雑誌の方はちょっと重くて内容も難しいので大変ですが、英文が短くてシンプルなら取り組みやすくなります。
雑誌が読みたかったら図書館で借りればOKです。Espressoは図書館では借りられません。
しかし、EspressoだけのためにThe Economistを定期購読するのも大変です。定期購読は、3,500円/月もするからです。
そこでいろいろ調べてみたら、Espresso単体のアプリを発見しました。
600円/月でこのサービスが利用できます。
あぁこれはいいかもしれない、と思って30日間のお試しをやっている最中です。
お試しにしなくても一記事は読めるので興味がある方は見てみてください。
これもバグって半永久的にお試しできないかな、、と淡い期待を抱いています。
毎日読んで、気に入った記事を1～2本ノートに書き写してみることにしました。
意識高い系です。
このように、日々英語を読んだり、書いたりする習慣をつけることが大切です。
英語で英語を勉強する。
今後もうまく生活の中に外国語学習を組み込んでいければいいなと思います。
